Gulat Okol

This unique traditional event is one of manifestation of the people’s gratefulness especially for the farmers for the God Favour on their crops. After the people crop their farming or harvest in dry season they held “Sedekah Bumi”, Remo Kaulan, and traditional wrestling which is well known as Okol. This traditional wrestling was firstly held in farming land. But, nowadays, it is held in a stage layered by mattress made of gunny sack and covered by rice stalk as safety. The stage sizes about 6 meters times 8 meters and made like boxing ring with two corners complete with thick rope on each sides. Besides revitalizing the tradition, Okol also becomes one of entertainment.  In one time wrestling show, there are two wrestlers. Each of them is marked by a band tied on their head and belt in different colours (usually red and black colours).  Every wrestler may fight in two rounds. The winner of all rounds will be squealed with another winners until there is only one who deserves as the champion. This traditional wrestling is divided into three categories: kids, teenage, and adult (both male and female). Traditional wrestlim from Setro Village, parts of Menganti Sub-district of Gresik, East Java had already held since hundreds year ago and is still continued until now as the heritage or legacy from our ancestors.
