Sunan Giri merupakan putera dari Syekh Maulana Ishaq dan Dewi Sekardadu (putri Raja Blambangan, Menak Sembuyu) yang lahir pada Tahun 1442 M, di masa kecilnya bernama Raden Paku atau Joko Samudro, kemudian diberi julukan Ainul Yaqin oleh Sunan Ampel atau Raden Rachmat yang tak lain adalah guru sekaligus pamannya sendiri/ adik dari dari ayahnya (Syekh Maulana Ishaq).

Selain sebagai ulama atau wali, beliau juga bertindak sebagai raja bergelar Prabu Satmoto dan memerintah Kerajaan Giri Kedaton pada tahun 1487-1506 M. Beliau memerintah Gresik dan sekitarnya selama beberapa generasi. Ketenaran beliau meliputi wilayah Madura, Lombok, Kalimantan, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores, Ternate, Sulawesi dan Maluku.

Sunan Giri wafat pada tahun 1506 M, dan dimakamkan diatas bukit dalam cungkup berarsitektur khas Jawa yang sangat unik. Makam Sunan Giri terletak di Dusun Giri Gajah Desa Giri Kecamatan Kebomas berjarak 4 Km dari pusat Kota Gresik.

Secara keseluruhan lingkungan makam ini nampak sakral dan berwibawa. Secara tata kelola keruangan arkeologis, area komplek makam Sunan Giri ini terbagi menjadi 3 langkan (area/bagian menuju bangunan utama dalam budaya Jawa) dengan gapuro sebagai penandanya, yaitu : area pertama/terluar berupa Gapura Bentar dengan Kala Makara berbentuk sepasang naga, area kedua juga berupa Gapura Bentar yang sudah tidak berbentuk, dan area ketiga berupa Gapura Paduraksa, kemudian area inti/ utama yaitu cungkup kubur Sunan Giri.

Sunan Giri, well known as: Raden paku, Raden Joko Samudro, Raden ‘Ainul Yaqin, Sultan Abdul Faqih, and Prabu Satmata, is the son of Sheikh Maulana Ishaq and Dewi Sekardadu (daughter of King Blmabangan, Menak Sembuyu) was born in 1442 M. in his childhood he was named as Raden Paku or Raden Joko Samudro, then, in his youth he was named as Raden ‘Ainul Yaqin by Sunan Ampel (Raden Rahmat, his teacher and also uncle from his father Sheikh Maulana Ishaq).

Besides his role as wali, Sunan Giri also role as a king of Giri Kedaton entitled Prabu Satmoto. He had been governing Giri Kedaton during 1487-1506 M. he governed Gresik and region nearby for many generations. His famous was spread through many regions as follows: Madura, Lombok, Kalimantan, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores, Ternate, Sulawesi and Maluku.

Sunan Giri died in 1506 M and was buried on the top of Giri hill. This tomb is placed in a cungkup or a dome (a temple-like building) which was built with Java Style architecture and was located in Giri Gajah hamlet (small village in Java culture), Giri village, part of Kebomas Sub-district of Gresik Regency. It is near the downtown, only about 4Km from Gresik town hall.

Overall, this graveyard looks so sacred and mystical. On its archeological spacial management, this graveyard area is divided into 3 langkan or spaces in Javanese Culture, they are:  1st or outer space is marked by Gapuro Bentar (two entrance structures in Java culture which stand partially each other) with Kala Makara (guardians symbol in Javanese Culture) shaped like a couple of dragons, the 2nd space is marked by Gapuro Bentar also but they are almost shapeless, and the 3rd or the inner space is marked by Gapuro Paduraksa (two entrance structures in Java culture which stand together and connecting each other), and the main space is the cungkup or dome itself.
