Makam Waliyah Zainab

Lokasi: Desa Diponggo, Kecamatan Tambak, Pulau Bawean, Kabupaten Gresik

Deskripsi:

Waliyah Zainab or Dewi Wardah is Kyai Ageng Bungkul; well known as Sunan Bungkul’s daughter. He was one of noble or very important person in Surabaya. He was one of King Majapahit descendants. Dewi Wardah was married with Raden Paku or Sunan Giri by by Sunan Bungkul as a gift wife or “garwo triman” in Java Language. It started when Sunan Bungkul stated his vow that whoever got struck down by the pome fruit which was fallen from its trunk but he didn’t die then he would be married with his daughter. Yet, because Sunan Giri already had a wife; Dewi Murthosyi’ah, Sunan Ampel’s daughter, and because Dewi Wardah didn’t agree to be a co-wife or 2nd wife, then she decided to go to the North of Surabaya by sailing “Sentong” a small boat made from coconut sheat or calyx-like. After days sailing she arrived at an island in the north of Java Sea which is well known as Bawean Island. Waliyah Zainab arrived and lived at Diponggo village, part of Tambak Sub-district of Bawean Gresik because she was previously rejected by people of Komalasa village (still in Bawean). Waliyah Zainab finally died and buried in Diponggo village; precisely behind the mosque of Diponggo.

The history of Waliyah Zainab or Dewi Wardah was written on Palmyra (palm leaves) in Java-Arabic version (well known as Pegon) and kept in Sultan Hasanuddin Museum in Banten.

From several versions of references about her journey to Bawean Island, Waliyah Zainab was predicted came and arrived at Bawean long time before Maulana Umar Mas’ud era.
